We leave the city of Cusco in private transport towards Tambomachay, an archeological site in the complex of Sacsayhuaman. It is thought, that this site has been used as a temple to worship the water. Evidently a place for ritual and also physical cleaning, it is one of the more impressive Inca baths. The impressive aqueducts, channels and cascades carved in stone are designed to channel water from a nearby spring.

Here we begin walking along the ancient Inca Trail and can also see Puca Pucara, possibly used as a control post at the entrance to Cusco. We are climbing up the valley and enjoy beautifull views into the surrounding valleys below, until we reach the Abra Sicllajasa (mountain pass, 4020m). We walk along the slope of the mountain through rough grass, wild crops and many cacti towards the Queullococha pass (4185m) and lake of the same name.

.

After climbing the Challu Challu pass (4420m) we can enjoy the stunning view over lagoons and the Chinchero plains. Ascending towards the Rumicruz pass (4230m) where we can enjoy the magnificent view of the snowy peaks of Veronica, Pitusiray, Chicon and San Juan. We then make our way to the Inca rock quarry, from where the rocks were extracted to build Huchuy Qosqo, before we descend to the beautiful Andean community of Pacamarca.

.

We continue our trek downhill, crossing a bridge and following a cobbled Inka trail. Whilst walking through this canyon, we are surrounded by terraces with flowers and majestic rocks. Arriving at the archaeological complex of Huchuy Qosqo, we explore this site during a guided tour.

..

You find an imposing architecture that includes: three-story houses, double jamb doorways, mixed constructions of stone and adobe, a large open ceremonial center from which we enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the Sacred Valley of the Incas and the Urubamba mountain, the Vilcanota River, and the snow capped mountain range of the same name.
